Beginner guide Ledger setup Hardware wallet

Introduction

This guide explains how to set up your Ledger hardware wallet step-by-step. Whether you're using a Ledger Nano S Plus or a Ledger Nano X, you'll learn how to initialize the device, choose a secure PIN, record your recovery phrase, install Ledger Live, and connect your accounts. The goal is to get your Ledger ready for safely storing cryptocurrencies, tokens, and NFTs.

Important: This is an educational guide. Always source Ledger firmware and Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. If you lost or feel unsure about your recovery phrase, stop and seek official Ledger support.

Quick setup steps (overview)

  1. Unbox and verify your Ledger device
  2. Install Ledger Live on your computer or mobile
  3. Initialize device: set PIN and generate recovery phrase
  4. Install apps and add accounts
  5. Test receive & backup
1

Unbox and verify your Ledger device

Only use a Ledger device purchased from an authorized reseller or ledger.com. Check tamper seals and minimal packaging.

When you buy a Ledger hardware wallet, make sure the package has not been opened or tampered with. Ledger devices come sealed and include a physical recovery sheet for your seed phrase. If packaging looks compromised, contact the seller or Ledger support before opening.

2

Download and install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official app for managing your accounts.

Go to the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android). Install and open it. Ledger Live helps you install blockchain apps and manage wallets while the private keys remain on your Ledger device.

3

Initialize your device: set PIN and create a recovery phrase

This is the most critical stage — do it offline and in private.

Follow the on-screen instructions on the Ledger device. Choose Create a new device, then set a 4-8 digit PIN you can remember. The device will display your 24-word recovery phrase (sometimes 18 or 12 words on older models). Write those words down on the recovery sheet exactly and in order. Do not store your recovery phrase digitally.

Never share your recovery phrase. Ledger support will never ask for your seed words.

4

Install apps and add crypto accounts

Use Ledger Live's Manager to install blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).

Once your device is initialized, connect it to Ledger Live and open the Manager. Install the apps for the blockchains you plan to use. Then add accounts inside Ledger Live and follow the prompts to view addresses on your device and confirm transactions.

5

Receive and test

Start with a small test deposit to verify everything works.

Use Ledger Live or a compatible wallet interface to generate a receive address. Confirm the address on your Ledger device screen. Send a tiny amount first to ensure the funds arrive correctly. After confirming, you can confidently move larger amounts.

Security recommendations when you set up your Ledger

  • Always buy from official channels. Counterfeit devices can be compromised.
  • Never enter your recovery phrase online. Do not store it digitally or take photos.
  • Use a strong PIN and enable passphrase support only if you understand its implications.
  • Backup and multiple copies. Keep one copy in a safe, offline location; consider a second secure copy in another secure place.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Device not recognized: Check cable, use a different USB port, or ensure Ledger Live is up to date.

Forgot PIN: A forgotten PIN requires device reset — the recovery phrase restores accounts.

Lost recovery phrase: If you lost the recovery phrase and cannot access your accounts, there is no way to recover funds without the phrase. Consider this a permanent risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ledger compatible with my smartphone?
+

Ledger Nano X supports Bluetooth and works with Ledger Live on mobile. Ledger Nano S Plus requires cable connection or use with a compatible mobile adapter.

Can I recover my wallet on a different Ledger device?
+

Yes. If you have your 24-word recovery phrase, you can recover your accounts on any compatible hardware wallet that supports the same standard (BIP39/BIP44).

Should I enable a passphrase?
+

A passphrase adds a second secret to your recovery. It provides extra security but increases complexity and risk (if you forget the passphrase you lose access). Use it only if you fully understand it.
